The Black Women’s Congressional Alliance

A black woman on the Hill once said: “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

That woman was Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to ever be elected to the United States Congress in 1968. Since then, our community has made great strides in improving the diversity on Capitol Hill of both staff and Members.

There is more work to do.
